Students these days are preparing for a written whole-day test/mock exams. Here is a hand-out I give to my students as an aid to help them prepare before the exam and during the exam. The hand-out is a modified version of a text that I got from Anette Haugen, who teaches English at Kristiansand katedralsokole.
En blogg om undervisning og vurdering i engelskfaget/A blog about teaching English and assessing English texts. Vurdering Som Læring.

"Outsourced" Study Guide / Intercultual Communication
The movie Outsourced is an excellent movie to show when working with the topic Intercultural Communication. It shows how an American has to learn to adapt himself to the Indian way of living when he has to move there for work purposes. I have prepared a study guide or discussion questions that students can work with after they have seen the movie. Here is a link to the guide.

Working with the novel "The Secret Life of Bees" by Sue Monk Kidd
One of the books my pupils read and work with is "The Secret Life of Bees" by Sue Monk Kidd. It is the story of a fourteen year old girl Lily who is looking for her mother. Set in South Carolina in 1964, when the Civil Rights Act was passed with an aim to end the segregation policies between blacks and whites, this book touches on racism and how Lily has to confront her own prejudices. This is an excellent book and highly recommended both for International English, Literature and Culture, Vocational Classes and Students taking general studies (Studiespesialiserende). The plot is well developed and not all is revealed right away and the reader has to read on to get answer to all the secrets of the plot.
For evaluation purposes, I usually have an oral conversation with my pupils (one on one) for 15 minutes. I really feel that this helps me assess their English speaking skills thoroughly. To work with this task, they get a few questions to work on as they read the book and also a list of questions they will have to answer when I evaluate them. Here is a link to a file where you will find the competence aims this task covers, questions that the pupils get for working with the book etc. Here are the Assessment Criteria/Form. I hand out this form to the pupils since all the criteria are there as well. Here is a link to the power point on Analysis and here is one for Literary Devices. Let me know if you want any of these files in word if you want to modify them etc. and I will email them to you :-)
While I have these conversations, the other pupils usually work with Folder Activities or Mappekrav. I wrote about this here earlier.

Skrivestrategier / Writing strategies - Part 2 of 3 - How to vary your sentences
According to one of the competence aims, pupils need to be able to use writing strategies. Another one is about writing well structured texts. Here is a power point that shows how we can write good texts by varying the sentence structure. It is written by Ruth Luman.

Varianter av Engelsk - Internasjonal Engelsk /Varieties of English - International English
kjerneområdet, og reflektere over deres særpreg
Vi leste også Brackley and the Bed from Access to International English.
Her er oppgaven:

According to the syllabus issued by the
The Norwegian Directorate for Education and Training, Upper Secondary School pupils taking the course International English need to:
- give examples of other varieties of English than those that are used in the Anglo-American core area, and reflect on their distinctive character.
In order to teach this, I use the following power point to go through differences between Standard and Non Standard English.
We work with Caribbean English and Asian English by going through texts from the British Library. We find a excellent explanation of how and where these two variants developed. We can also hear how these two varieties are pronounced and a brialliant explanation of the phonology. (Thanks Kimberly Skjelde who pointed out these sites to me).
Here are some more texts from NDLA which we used:
We also read Brackley and the Bed from Access to International English.
I have written another post about how I combine the above mentioned competence aim with other competence aims. You can read about it Here.
When we were done with going through all these texts, the pupils got to work with the following task. This is a task that NDLA has created, but I have made certain changes to it and added competence aims and assessment criteria etc. Here is the task:
Here is a video which shows how two of my students answered this task. (Thank you Hilde and Hedvig that you let me post this video here): Video: Singlish

En eksempeloppgave på en veldig bra skrevet/strukturert essay/artikkel og lærerkommentarer - A very well written and structured essay /Objective article and teacher comments
I følge NDLA er, "An article is a piece of writing on a particular subject which is written for publication in a magazine or newspaper. However, when asked to write an article at school or in an exam you are expected to write an essay or paper (in Norwegian, “a stil”) unless a particular type of article is specified e.g. a newspaper article"
Klikk her for å laste ned eksempeloppgaven.

Fordypningsoppgave Internasjonal Engelsk / In-depth project International English
Klikk her for å laste ned undervisningsopplegget.

Standard English and Non-Standard English
I faget internasjonal engelsk må elevene kunne:

Pupils taking the programme subject, "International English," have to be able to:
- give examples of other varieties of English than those that are used in the Anglo-American core area, and reflect on their distinctive characte
- give an account of fundamental features of English usage and linguistic structure
During exams, students are often asked to compare the use of standard english with other non-standard ones. In order to do that, the students need to be able to describe the fundamental features of linguistic structure in English. To work with these two aims, I asked the pupils to give five examples each of different word classes and grammatical terms like nouns, question tags etc.
Once that was established, we worked with different varieties of English through a power point and audio files. Then, the students got a document from me which should help them use the correct grammatical terms when they discuss how a certain sentence written in non-standard English differs from standard English. I made sure that the pupls would know that there is no "right" or "wrong" variety of English, and they need to use the terms "standard" and "non standard use."

En Usedvanlig God Gotisk Novelle / A Brilliant Gothic Story
Her er en usedvanlig god novelle. Klikk her: Everything Will be Alright.
One of my students wrote the following short story in the gothic genre. It is brilliant. You can read it here. Click here: Everything Will be Alright. My chest swells up with pride whenever any of my students produce something exceptional. We used the Process- Oriented Approach to Writing.
Those of you who are familiar with the genre will probably notice the superb use of a literary device called Doubles.
